Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railroad was formed with the combination
of the Burlington Northern Railroad and the Santa Fe
Railroad. The Santa Fe Railway was known as the Atchison,
Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) since 1863. The
creator of the AT&SF was a man named Cyrus Kurtz
Holliday. The Burlington Northern (BN) Railroad was formed
in 1970 with the merger of the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy Railroad (CB&Q), the Great Northern Railway
(GN), the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway (SP&S),
and the Northern Pacific Railway (NP). Burlington Northern
Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) has over 200,000 freight cars and
6,300 locomotives rolling on 32,000 miles of track. BNSF
has 40,000 employees. The headquarters for the Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railway is in Fort Worth, Texas.
